Malibongwe igama lamakhosikazi (Lets praise the name of women)

As we celebrate the 56th Anniversary of the 1956 Women’s March to the Union Building.  I can’t help but think of what could have been going through their minds when they were preparing for that historical day.  I have no doubt in my mind that these heroines work up at dawn, most probably some of them did not even fall asleep the night before anticipating what might unfold during that day.

The anxiety and yet the fearlessness and courage they displayed remains unmatched.  The women from most parts of South African were tired of carrying passes,  it is said they shouted and chanted the names of their oppressors.  The women were tired of being treated like children and second class citizens in the land of their birth. I can imagine the pain and insults that might have been hurled at them, those who spit and called them names in the land of their foremothers and forefathers.

These women were fighting for the future of their grandchildren.  They knew very well that total emancipation would take time, sacrifice and loss of lives. Those brave women were fighting for my grandchildren too, they were fighting for an environment where my grandchildren can realize their true potential and have equal opportunities to prosper and lead the nation to great heights.

Many would have though that these women were wasting their time and that they had too much time at their disposal.  I, a lady that was born six years later on the very same day, testify that their fight was not invein, indeed their contribution has paved the way for full emancipation of women in South Africa and the rest of the continent.  I know there is still much to be done however I do believe that they have been some meaningful strides that have been reached in the quest for full emancipation of women. #smed12

TRUE FRIENDSHIP

On my 50th birthday it donned on me that my life has been surrounded by people who have demonstrated to me what it means to live your to the fullest and not let obstacles dictate your future.  As I embark on my next target of reaching 100 years, I feel it’s proper to acknowledge a lady whom I have come to call a friend and tell the world what I have learned from her through a note that I had penned to her.  The note reads as follow:

I know of a woman who has shown me that Society should not determine how you live your life, a lady with so much strength to rise against all odds and claim her rightful place. My friend your strength and resilience amazes me, its women like you that make me proud to be counted amongst the female species. You don't conform to the standards that our narrow minded society set for us, you crafted your own and did not comprise on them, you are indeed a lady of substance. Keep on rising young lady because the sky is the limit.
I have past my prime years, I have lived a life filled with success, obstacles, happiness and hurt, but I am still standing through all the storms I have encountered.  I know I owe some of the achievements and courage that I have gained because of people like her, people who are not scared to tell you when you are wrong and its people of that nature that make me proud to have live the life that I have lived for 50 years.  I pray and hope I will meet more people of this caliber that will complement my life, people who will love me for who I am and not expect more than I can offer.  I thank my dear friend for being my ideal friend and hope for many years with her. #smed12

DEATH HAS ROBBED ME ONCE AGAIN

My friend is no more.  I have lost a friend, his children have lost a father and the community has lost a leader who never comprised his values and that of the people he was leading.  A leader of note, a man that has left a significant mark in our lives and man whose legacy will never be questioned even if one tried to oppose it. Through my friend, I now see myself better and stronger and I am thankful for having an opportunity of knowing this human being and I am thankful for what he has done for me.

When I received news from his children indicating that my friend was in a critical condition, I stopped everything and rushed to the hospital to plead with him to postpone his departure because his job was not done on this earth.  Upon my arrival I discovered that my dear friend was no more, he had accepted the invitation from our late friends, he had taken his last breath, closed his eyes for the last time and his heart seized to beat.

I had a pleasure of knowing this soul who was with me and my family through bitter and sweet day.  I hope that my friend enjoys where he is right now, I wish him happiness and joy in his journey in the land of the unknown.  I thank the Lord for giving me a chance to show my appreciation for what the man has done for me and not only pay tribute to him once he is no more.  Rest in peace dear friend, you have come to the end of your journey on this earth, may you be one of the first ones to welcome me when my time has come to take that journey.  Rest in peace dear friend you have indeed shown me what it means to means to live a life with no regrets. #smed12
